Stamps are used in every country of the world to show that postage has been paid on letters and packages sent through the postal services. It is a small rectangle shaped sticker that you attach to the top right had corner of an envelope. There is usually a picture or symbol on the stamp to denote a particular event for which it was issued and it contains the name of the country in which it was issued as well as the year. Since there are variations denominations, the price is also evident on the stamp. You may need to have several of these on a piece of mail to make up the correct amount of postage required for mailing the letter or package.

The first postage stamp was issued in 1840 on May 6, in England. There were two of them - a one penny black and a two pence blue. The one penny black displayed the head of Queen Victoria. After that date, many royal persons were depicted on these stickers. Brazil was the second country to institute the use of these stickers on pieces of mail in 1843. They were called Ox Eyes. In the same year Zurich introduced the Swiss Cantones Zurich and Geneve. It was not until 1845 that the practice of placing a stamp on mail was introduced in the US and the first official one was issued in 1847. The stamp that is now famous all over the world, the Mauritian stamp, came into existence in 1847. These were the one-penny orange and the one-penny blue. The first stamp to be issued in Germany was in 1849 and was called the black Bavarian Kreuzer. The system became uniform in just about all countries of the world by 1860.

The original stamp was not on a perforated sheet as we see them today or affixed in a roll. They were printed on sheets of paper and had to be cut apart. The sender had to glue the stamp onto the letter and it was not until 1857 that the first perforated versions were invented. Sir Rowland Hill invented the adhesive stamp and was knighted for this achievement.

Stamp collecting began very soon after the first ones were issued and was regarded by some as a very foolish hobby. Because there were not very many of them, stamp collectors looked for stamps from all over the world. At the time they were not stored in albums as they are today, but were often affixed to wallpaper or attached by a string. This led to the invention of the first stamp collecting books.

Dr. John Edward Gray is considered to be the first stamp collector in the world. Today, it is a hobby for both the young and old. There are many different kinds to collect, such as commemorative, definitive and special. The definitive type is the most common and is printed in large numbers. The commemorative and special types are only for special occasions, such as to denote a particular event that is taking place or for a special season of the year and are not available or used all the time.

French Stamps: Historical Background

The first postage stamp was introduced in the United Kingdom in 1840 by Rowland Hill and James Chalmers. This stamp, the penny black, had a face value of a penny and revolutionized the postal system in that it was now up to the sender to bear the cost of postage and not the recipient as had been the case until then. Because it was now so cheap to send letters, even by 1840 a penny was not a lot of money, the change prompted an almost instant increase in the amount of mail. Other countries took notice and reformed their own postal system, amongst which Brazil in 1843, the United States in 1847 and France in 1849.

While the same change was proposed as soon as 1837 in France, it took nine years for the postal administration to change, following the 1848 revolution and the impetus of Arago. The first French stamp featured Ceres, the Roman divinity for agriculture and had a face value of 20 centimes or cents. The drawing of Ceres is from Jean Jacques Barre. The Ceres stamp was enough to pay for an envelope up to 7.5 grams to be sent anywhere in France. Shortly after was released a 40 centimes stamp color orange for bigger envelopes and a vermilion red 1 Franc stamp. However, the color of the 1 Franc stamp was too similar to the 40 centimes stamp and people were confusing them. This lead to a change in color for the 1F stamp from vermilion red to deep carmine. Today, the vermilion red 40 centimes stamp is the rarest of French stamps.

French Stamps Today

Stamp collecting is the number one hobby in France with more than two million people practicing it. Exotic islands, botanic, birds, stamp sheets, specimens or air post stamps are popular themes amongst French stamps collectors. Like in other countries, the value of French stamps is often determined by some type of unusual feature some stamps are known to exhibit. This is true for old and new stamps alike. For example, the 1989 stamp commemorating the Revolution designed by Folon is worth less than a euro, but if the signature of Folon is lacking the value of the stamp jumps to 180 euros. Similarly, if the face value of the stamp issued in 2004 commemorating the entente cordiale between France and England is lacking, the stamp can be worth 300 euros and up.

How old a stamp is also plays a big role in its valuation. There are three main periods in the history of the French stamp: the classic period from 1840 to 1900 ; the semi modern period, from 1900 to 1939 and the modern period from 1939 onwards. Stamps from the classical period are highly valued, especially the vermilion red 1 franc featuring Ceres from 1849-1850, which costs 90 000 euros new and 20 000 euros used. A bloc of four of such stamps sold for 820 000 euros at auction because one of the stamps was "tÃªte-bÃªche", printed upside down.

You may be wondering, "Why do people collect stamps?" Initially, British children saw collecting as a fun game, since stamps were inexpensive to buy and had vivid pictures. These days many people are prompted to collect because a relative passed down the tradition or bought them a souvenir sheet of stamps. Today over 20 million Americans engage in postage stamp collecting, making it one of the most popular type of compilations.

In 1840, Britain introduced the "Penny Black" as the first adhesive postage stamp. Little did they realize that this would set off a postage stamp collecting craze among the youth, otherwise known as "Timbromania" (meaning "stamp madness".) As these little hobbyists aged, they proudly passed their stamp collections down to the next generation and thus a market was born.

The US caught on to this Timbromania in the 1930s, when the first souvenir sheet was printed and the 65-cent "Graf Zeppelin" portrayed a German blimp. During the Great Depression, many stamps were incinerated since few families could afford a book of stamps during this time period, since the cost of one would also pay for a family of four to eat for one week!

It became the misprints that became the most coveted in the world of collecting postage stamps. Most serious collectors will try to seek out a rare stamp resulting from a printing error. For instance, the "Inverted Jenny" is a US postage one from 1918 featuring a photo of a Curtiss JN-4 airplane where the plane was mistakenly printed upside-down!

Only 100 were ever printed and a block of four just sold at an auction for $2.7 Million! The US-made "Benjamin Franklin Z Grill" ones were made with a waffle pattern embossed into the paper supposedly to prevent the ink from running. Only two were printed before they realized this process was impractical. Now one stamp could get as much as $3 Million!

Internationally, collecting postage stamps often equates with big bucks. For example, the "Treskilling Yellow" one from Sweden was misprinted in the wrong color, placing its value at over $2 Million. Historically, Britain's "Penny Black" (the first official adhesive stamp) sold for $200 in the year 2000, and unused went for as much as $3,000!

Or imagine owning the "British Guiana Magenta," a rare stamp with a face value of one cent but an estimated value of $935,000! There is much controversy surrounding this one.

Since there is only one known copy in existence, some say that it was an altered 4-cent one, however these claims were disproved. Others speculate that another copy was discovered but was purchased by Arthur Hind, who owned the original and who quietly destroyed the copy so he wouldn't lose the value. In 1999 a forged copy was found in Bremen, Germany.

Addressing your wedding invitation can actually be a more difficult process than it would seem on the surface. We were all instructed on how to address envelopes at some point in our lives. However, the rules change a bit when it comes time to address a wedding invitation. Everything about the invitation can be scrutinized, so it is a good idea to have an attention to detail during this process.

Also, the manner in which you address the envelope is important. Following the proper rules of formality and etiquette is crucial in order to avoid possibly insulting a guest. However, before you even get to those rules, you must first understand the distinctions between the outer and inner envelopes.

Wedding invitations were historically delivered in two envelopes. The outer envelope was a large, square envelope meant to absorb all of the wear and tear of the delivery process. The inner envelope would then be part of the design of the invitation and be kept in pristine condition through the mailing process. The two envelope system is still used today. The outer envelope absorbs the stamps, postage markings and any other damages that may occur in the mailing process, while the inner envelope remains well protected. Frequently, the outer envelope will be constructed of the same type of paper as the inner envelope. It will just lack a few of the frills. Having both, the outer and inner envelope is not a necessity of invitation etiquette, but it is common practice.

There is no need for a return address or any sort of postage. It is also important to include the names of anybody in the household who will be invited. For example, when inviting an entire family, you may only include the names of the parents on the outer envelope. But on the inner envelope the names of the children should be included. You can shorten all of this by simply addressing the inner envelope as "Mr. - , Mrs. - and children." If you are inviting an individual and a guest, you should write the name of the guest if you know it. The only time you write "and guest," is if you do not know the name of the invitee’s guest. If you are having a formal ceremony you should use titles and last names to list your guests, but if a more contemporary style is fitting to your wedding you can use just the first names of your guests on the inner envelope. This can give the invitation a more personal touch.

The rules of properly addressing your wedding invitation do not make the process of inviting guests difficult, but the potential of insulting guests by not following proper etiquette makes it important to do things the right way. Be sure to take the time and effort necessary to address the envelope for your wedding invitations properly, and your wedding will no doubt be a memorable event.

Before the stamp was invented the receiver of a letter paid the postage instead of the sender, which the receiver sometimes refused to pay or accept the letter. However, sometimes the sender would just place a secret message on the letter and when ever the receiver viewed the message he did not need pay for the letter.
The very first postage stamp ever issued was the 1 Penny Black, which was issued by Britain on May 6th of 1840 and pictured the young Queen Victoria. These first stamps were produced and designed by an English schoolmaster by the name of Rowland Hill in 1837. For his act of producing the first stamp was rewarded by him being knighted. These stamps were rated by weight instead of by size, which was three-quarters by seven-eighths, were issued as prepayment for possible postage mail. These first stamps were produced in only black ink.
In fact, the profile of Queen Victoria remained on the British stamps for sixty years until the year 1900. These original stamps had to be cut from the sheet it was produced on by scissors, because they did not have perforations. Unused 1 Penny Black stamps are quite rare, but they are still in existence today. Two days after the release of the Penny Black on May 8th of 1840 the 2 Pence Blue was released, which used blue dies, but was eventually placed into cancellation.
The popularity of this brand new system of sending mail and collecting a fee in advance spread quickly and other countries soon began using similar systems. Brazil was the next country to get into the process of using stamps when it issued the Ox Eye on July 1st in 1843. During that same year Switzerland issued the Canton Zurich on August 1st, which had its digit on the back and the Canton Geneve on September 30th, which was called the Doppelgenf and featured a coat of arms. They followed their stamping designs again in 1845 with their release of the Canton Basel on July 1st entitled, Basler Tauchen.
The first United States stamp were issued on July 1st of 1847 and featured a George Washington ten cent stamp and a Benjamin Franklin five cent stamp. On September 21st of that year the Blue and Orange Mauritus featuring Queen Victoria was released by Mauritius. Bermuda followed up during 1848 with the Bermuda 1 Penny. During the year of 1849 three other stamps were issued. The first was issued on the first of January from France called the Head of Ceres, the second was released on the first of July entitled Leopold I from Belgium, and the last stamp released that year was from Bavaria on the first of November entitled Schwarzer Einser, which was the first German stamp issued.
During 1850, Spain released their Queen Isabella II stamp on the first of January. Also during that same year New South Wales issued a stamp on the tenth of January called Sydney and Imigrants, and Victoria issued a stamp of Queen Victoria sitting on the fifteenth of January. On the fourth of April, Switzerland issued a stamp of coat of arms, Austria issued their coat of arms stamp on the first of June, and Saxony issued the Sachsen-Dreier on the first of July, plus on that same day the British Guayana stamp featuring the name of the postmaster in a circle.
The first pre-stamped envelopes were sold in 1852 and during 1855 a prepayment of postage began being required in the United States. In 1857, the very first perforated stamps appeared in the United States and almost all countries have started using postage stamps by 1860. During the year of 1869 the first picture stamps showing something other than dead people appeared on the first of January. Pre-stamped postcards, which could be purchased for one cent, were issued in 1871.
The Colonial Government of Gibraltar assumed control of Postal Services of Bermuda on the first of January on 1886 when their plates were overprinted using a variety of colors. During December of that same year Gibraltar began replacing the design with his own and then his stamps were used with peseta values from 1889 to 1898.

On one sheet the design was known as a se-tenant and four different stamps on the Christmas issue of that year featured holly, mistletoe, poinsettia, and a sprig of conifer.
